Veritas College was founded in 1992 with the amalgamation of the Convent of Our Lady of Mercy and Saint Brendan’s Christian Brothers College. Both had been gender based schools but would now be co-educational. The Preparatory and Pre-Preparatory sections made their home on the Convent property and the Senior School was situated at CBC. Many months of preparation preceded the opening and as a result the College quickly revealed its unique nature. The parent schools both enjoyed an excellent reputation in Springs for sound education grounded in traditional Catholic values. Many of our parents and teachers are past pupils of the founder schools and in this way ensure that the core ethos remains as we constantly rise to the challenges of these interesting times. From the beginning the Convent enjoyed a reputation for academic excellence but it was the special Dominican spirit of community participation, hard work and prayer which set the school apart. Initially only Standards Two and Three were available, but by 1972 there was the first Matric group. Both schools were very involved with the community, participating in the Junior Town Council, Rotary Youth Leadership Association and Rotary Quizzes and Debates. A very cordial and competitive relationship has always existed between the private and public schools in our town, and inter-school sporting leagues and cultural events are a feature of our school-life. We continue to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Association. The P.T.S.A is a parent-based body, with input from teachers and students, that raises money for the school through fun-raising activities. The Annual General Meeting is held in the first term to report back and endorse the committee for that year. As a community orientated school with an entrenched family spirit, we encourage all families to attend P.T.S.A functions. As a private school, fund raising is an important aspect of financial school management and for upgrading facilities and equipment. A big fund raising project that the P.T.S.A runs is the My School Card Supporter Programme. The P.T.S.A is a vital part of the financial running of Veritas College. Their hard work brings in many necessary funds to assist the College in maintenance, transport and general improvements. Veritas College is a Catholic school grounded in the Educational vision of the Dominican Order and the Christian Brothers. We believe that every person, being created by God, is essentially good. Our challenge is to create the broad educational framework and opportunities in order to enable each learner to aspire to that goodness. We believe that as educators we have a serious responsibility to teach our subject matter passionately, and to inspire learners to love knowledge and discover their individual talents so that they can set and realize their academic goals. We believe that we have an obligation to teach for life: each learner should leave Veritas with a clear sense of the ethical and moral challenges of life. Hopefully we do challenge learners to be counter-cultural so that they do not become blind followers, but are able to reason independently about how they will choose to live. If we fail to uncover the spiritual and to encourage learners to be members of faith communities then our own existence is challenged. As a Catholic School we must have respect for all believers regardless of their particular spiritual journey.
